When I asked my best friend what is the single problem that he faced as a business owner; he deliberated and answered: “Money”
I then asked again, “How much money do you want? And If I give that money to you now, do you know what to do with it?”
A long silence follows and I proceed to explain my questions further; he then said “now that you have asked, I really need to think about it…”
In between my explanation to him on my asking of those questions; he asked me for my answer to the same question. I firmly answered: “I need a No.2 – a COO”; this is the realisation after one whole week of Chinese New Year celebration. In between the rituals, the customs, the family reunion and the catching up with friends, it turned out to be great time for soul-searching!
My firm answer indicates that I have known it all along and in the song of U2, my favorite rock band of all time, “… and I still haven’t found what I looking for”! That probably sums up my firm and my feeling at this very moment.
It is almost impossible to expand further until my hunt is successful. I can’t be doing everything on my own. The late nights and exhaustions of the past few weeks including the Chinese New Year only confirm my view. When production and quality is an issue, the temptation to do everything on your own as the business owner is far too great, but it remains a short term solution.
This leads me to another question, who exactly am I looking for? If I am Steve Jobs, I need a Steve Wozniak. I want to be part of the Rales brothers that compliment each other in terms of qualities for that quietly sprawling empire of the Danaher.
This was told to me in TAIPAN last year; and I have witnessed constructive changes in one of my key clients after their fresh appointment of a COO. I need no further convincing.
Am I looking for a Partner? My answer since I started CA has always been a firm “NO”. May be, it is about time to change. I need to convince this person of my vision and gain unquestionable trust by envisage a cake of the same size (very hard but never stop trying). As I fancied myself as a top line manager, I need someone who can manage the bottom line at ease.
Where do I look for this person? I very much love to have this person inside CA now, but if I can’t get it inside, get it outside. The natural law of attraction means that I shall go to places with great likelihood of a No. 2 and start manifesting such intend. A slower route would be to train one and use the best available at the moment.
It’s frustrating that you know what you want and not getting it! Sometime, it is better not to know or otherwise be patient while actively pursuing the same.
Meanwhile, there is this phrase that is sort of stuck with me for the last few months – “Small is the new Big!”
Save for Big Screen TV and the Big markets in China and India, Big used to be attractive! Economic of scale, control etc. Today, growth does not mean Big but performance or rather do things more effectively, less for more!

Small is the new BIG only when the person running the small think BIG!Another phrase on my mind the last few days is “Less is More”, you get more (focus) by doing less, you get lesser result if you do to much (spreading too thin!); realising this now, I have perhaps written too much for this addition! If you are still reading, thank you.
