The very first time that I was invited to attend TAIPAN – The Making of Asian Giants (a yearly entrepreneurial tutorial organized jointly by EO and YPO) when I just started by practice a few years ago, I was amazed by Verne Harnish’s proposition of taking a break from the business from time to time. It was almost laughable for me, a start-up and wannabe entrepreneur at that time.
Give me a break? You must be joking! Of course, Verne went to cite the example of Bill Gates taking break to clear his tower of guilt (the staggering reading materials piling up in his office) and the various benefits that come along. But, Bill who? We are talking about one of the wealthiest in the history of mankind! Me? For a month-long vacation?
It’s the time of the year that I need to appease my wife with an annual “trip”. Normally, these “trips” are a 3 to 4 days rush job including the traveling. We ended up more exhausted after the trip than before the trip. A complete discharge rather than a recharge!
My theory of “Poor man in the West; Richman in the East” was convincingly sold to my wife and the mystical Bali was the destination of enticing SPA indulgence. This was the longest personal holiday since I started my practice – about a week. Pathetically, I was bringing my lab top (just in case).
After the first two days of struggle (between business and leisure), I finally see some lights casted by Verne a few years ago. Things become clearer (this is supposed to be a syndrome)!
My “Bali Enlightenments” (most of it during the many sessions of traditional massage and spa treatment) are simply:
There is a thematic restaurant called “Bubba Gump” in Kuta. It brought back good memory. Forest Gump must be one of my favorite movies of all time. I had the pleasure of watching in again. I realised that I am an avid admirer of Forest Gump unconsciously. I practiced Gumpism and it is all about:
I am planning for my next break already (trying two weeks before reaching the ultimate one-month target). Thanks Verne!

My “Bali Enlightenments” (most of it during the many sessions of traditional massage and spa treatment) are simply:
- I am determined to invest in HR;
- I must build a second liner to stand in the absence (being away also help as the natural leaders shall fill the vacuum and role players to take up bigger role);
- The Approach: first “who” then “what”, get a group of CA Breeds and provide them with space – it will take its place;
- Being away also build trust that you never thought possible;
- Within the CA Team, one must be able to say it out even if it is not pleasing to the ears; and
- It is okay to be small for now but do not appear small. Think BIG!

- (a) thematic solution;
- (b) focus determination;
- (c) one at a time;
- (d) do before doubt;
- (e) trust worthy and keeping promises; and
- (g) be the best that you can be!
